Also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is an American holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. On June 19th 1865, a Union solider arrived in Galveston Texas and announced General Order No. 3, declaring that all enslaved people in Texas were free. This proclamation came more than two years after President Lincolns Emancipation Proclamation.
It is a time for remembrance and celebration of freedom. It is a day for both solemn reflection on the legacy of slavery and joyful celebration of the progress made towards equality and justice.
